So, you’ve finally got that new phone you’ve been dreaming of! Congrats! But hold on a second before you start snapping selfies and showing it off. There’s something important you need to do first: check if your phone is PTA-approved. If it’s not, you’ll need to register it and pay the PTA tax.
In this blog, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about PTA Mobile tax in Pakistan. We’ll also introduce you to a super helpful tool – the PTA Tax Calculator.
But let’s start with the basics: what exactly is PTA Tax?
Taxes are important for our country’s development and improving our quality of life. In Pakistan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) charges a tax on all mobile phones brought into the country, whether they’re new or used. This tax is a must if you’ve been using your phone for more than four months. Paying it ensures your phone works properly on Pakistani networks like Jazz, Zong, etc., so you can enjoy things like your Zong internet packages without any issues.
There are a few key reasons why the government collects this tax:
The PTA tax isn’t a fixed amount; it changes depending on the price of your phone. Usually, it’s somewhere between 17% to 32% of the phone’s declared value. Remember, the tax amount can also differ if you’re registering with your passport versus your CNIC.
Also, keep in mind that the price of the same phone model can vary depending on where you buy it, whether it’s from a shop in your city or an online store.
Here’s a table showing the latest PTA tax rates based on your phone’s price:
Mobile Phone Price (C&F Value in USD) | PTA Tax (PKR) |
---|---|
Up to 30 | 1,230 |
Above 30 and up to 100 | 6,400 |
Above 100 and up to 200 | 17,280 |
Above 200 and up to 350 | 23,800 + 17% GST |
Above 350 and up to 500 | 34,000 + 17% GST |
Above 500 and up to 700 | 52,000 + 17% GST |
Above 700 | 60,000 + 17% GST |
Figuring out the exact amount can be a bit confusing, but that’s where the PTA Tax Calculator comes in handy!

Once you've got an idea of the PTA tax amount, it's time to check your mobile's status. Here's a simple guide to do just that:
Open your web browser and type in 'fbr.gov.pk'. This will take you to the official website of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the main tax authority in Pakistan.
Scroll down on the FBR homepage until you see the CUSTOMS section. In this section, look for and click on the 'DIRBS' link.
Once you're in the DIRBS section, scroll down again. You'll find a link called 'Device Verification System PTA'. Click on it.
Clicking that link will take you to the PTA Linked Portal website. This is where you can check your device's status and tax details.
On the portal, scroll down until you see the 'Check your device status' section. This is where you'll enter your phone's details to see its PTA status.
You'll need your phone's IMEI number, which is a unique 15-digit code. To find it, dial *#06# on your phone. If your phone has two SIM cards, it will have two IMEI numbers.
Enter the IMEI number(s) into the 'Check your device status' box on the portal. Make sure you enter it correctly!
Tick the captcha box to prove you're not a robot, then click the 'Check' button.
The next screen will show you your mobile's tax status with PTA. If everything's clear, you'll see a green line. If there's an issue, you'll see a red cross.
